Blues Guitar Lessons on DVD: Do they work?

Have you worked through any blues guitar lessons on a DVD?

I know I have. I spent a long time trying to learn blues guitar from every source imaginable. There were not as many options as there are now, but there have always been videos. Back then they were VHS tapes though.

After studying a lot of different blues guitar lesson videos, I thought there was some material that a lot of videos didn’t cover. I had been teaching this stuff to my private students for years and they seemed to be picking up things pretty quickly using my techniques.

This is when I decided I needed to put some of my blues guitar lessons on video. I think I have some really useful stuff in these DVDs, but it really doesn’t matter what I think.  It matters what the students learn. So I try to constantly improve the lesson material and put together videos that cover things I think are what people should learn to take their blues guitar playing to the next level.

I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I do know that what I teach I have used in the studio and in live situations to play some cool blues guitar in the style of Duane Allman, Derek Trucks, Johnny Winter, SRV, Eric Clapton, and Warren Haynes.

After all is said and done, the only thing that matters are the results people get when they work through a lesson and apply it. I want to know what you have learned from my slide guitar and >blues guitar lessons on DVD, and if you have seen real world results with your playing.

Are you applying these techniques in live band situations? If so what has been the outcome? Let me know what you think right below. The only way for me to provide better lessons is to know what has worked you.

  1. I’ve used slide in standard tuning for a few years now.You video lessons helped look at the fretboard in a new way & helped open up my playing.
I’ve started turning heads at the jam sessions !
Thanks for making this available to us !

  2. I just recently picked up slide. I had messed around with it, but nothing too serious had come from it. When I found the Duane Allman slide guitar lessons I was so amazed at his genius and I knew I just had to learn how to play like that. I still haven’t mastered slide or anything, but in my rehearsals and live at gigs people are really impressed by my playing. That kind of slide guitar playing just isn’t heard too often anymore.
Thank you for presenting these lessons in such a way that I can actually understand how each riff is being played.

  3. I ordered the Stormy Monday and Trouble No More lessons, and also the Statesboro blues lesson. These lessons have been my gateway into learning music that I have heard since the “70s. The instructor has a great feel for the music. It shows in the videos.

  4. John’s lessons are easy to follow and packed with great information. I really liked the beginner lessons and have recently been working on the blues lessons. What I really like is playing familiar licks and songs instead of just scales. Keep up the great work John.

  5. Hi John:
Just wanted to let you know that your slide guitar lessons have gotten me back into playing slide. I just about gave up on it a few years ago, and there was really nobody in my area to take any lessons from. You have produced real life easy to understand and apply lessons, and all I have to do is add consistent practice….in my case a lot of consistent practice, but that’s all right, I’ve been enjoying it. Thanks, and keep on keeping on.

  6. i enjoy this site very much, anyone interested in slide or blues guitar would be hard pressed to find a better site. The videos are of high quality and very informative

  7. Hi John

Just wanted to let you my playing has come on leaps and bounds thanks to your friendly teaching style i have so far downloaded the blues dvd on the blues scale and pentatonic scale i have only been learning for about six months but have come on in leaps and bounds with your help.

  8. This site offers a variety of techniques. However, it is essential to have a practice routine that you run through everyday. If you practive these things everyday this site will help bring your guitar playing to the next level.

  9. Best site for Slide guitrar players! Even if you have played for years you will enjoy this site. Keeps you wanting more!

  10. Truth is if want any instruction on slide guitar in open e from beginning to advanced that is not in an old 20’s bottleneck style… this is it. You’re just not going to find a whole lot of material on this subject. Learning Guitar Now has filled a major need in the music instruction market.

Knowing that, Learning Guitar Now could of put together a really weak product and still probably moved a lot it due to the lack of product on the market. Lucky for us they didn’t! I have purchaded many of their products and have never been disappointed.

  11. I have been working on the blues DVD for a few weeks now and I thinks its one of the best things I could have done to enhance my guitar skills.
    Thanks
    Jason

  12. Like most other reviewers, had tried to learn slide for a long time, bought books and DVDs and still couldn’t get it.

Bought the 4 DVD set from here and finally understand muting and am able to play intro to Statesboro blues.

  13. I have been inspired to take on a slide song in open E in my band. Part of this is due to John’s teaching and the way he makes slide playing seem like something that can be learned if you just put in the time. I like the way he focuses on specific artists and songs and shows specific details.

  14. I don’t use any other form of education.
Don’t read music, hate tab unless absolutely necessary.
Just like the old guys did it, “…here’s how it’s done, now you do it.”
    Simple.

  15. I’ve been using john’s slide guitar techniques in my blues band for over a year now and it’s become the little extra thing I bring to the table to put the band over the top.

  16. Watching a few of John’s free lessons convinced me to take a shot at playing in open E tuning. Our band has now added two tunes that use this tuning! I am real interested in the new dvd on playing slide in standard tuning as well.

  17. This is a perfect product for those who want to explore slide guitar. For those who are a fan of Derek Trucks or Allman Brothers, this is the best tutorial you can find online.

  18. I started with the pentatonic blues lessons. what a great lesson had me playing some really amazing licks along with the backup track. what a lot of fun. which is what it is all about THE FUN . I downloaded blues scale dvd 2 and have found even more great licks . Johns lessons are a good way to better understand your instrument and fretboard . I have alot more depth in my solos now .

  19. All of these slide lessons give you everything you need to play great guitar.John really breaks it down good, making it easy to understand. If you don’t get it after his lessons, you’re just not trying.

  20. I purchased the Blues Guitar Method set of DVD’s after seeing john on You Tube.
I have completed Method 1 dvd and cannot wait to get into the rest. At ten years old I had a guitar in my hands, and 41 years later I am still playing out and learning as much as I can. Johns technique and lesson plans have filled the learning gap that I needed in my soloing. Thanks John.

  21. I’ve been playing guitar for over 30 years. I’ve wanted to play slide solos like Duane Allman for almost that long. I tried to figure it out on my own several times but always gave up in frustration. Decided to give it another try recently and found John’s lessons on Youtube. I figured it was worth a shot so I ordered his first Slide Guitar DVD. Practiced with the DVD for a couple of weeks and started adding slide parts to songs at my jam band sessions. For me, it was a long time dream fulfilled. John can get you there, folks. Give him a try.

  22. I’ve got blues dvd volume 4. My initial impression was, meh. I kept expecting to buy a Dvd and find the magic licks. Well, I came to my senses and now realize that I use the ideas that John teaches when I play my own licks, riffs, etc. That’s way better than playing his licks. Thanks John!

  23. Hey John –

Love the new dvd on Standard Tuned Slide playing. Heck, I have loved all of the different dvds and lessons I have downloaded from you!

Keep up the great work and I am really looking forward to seeing what else you have up your sleeve!

  24. I just got the slide-DVD in Standardtuning. And I’m looking forward to study theese lisks because thas the uning hat I studied for a couple of years in school, but eventhough I was accustumed to guitarplaying in this tuning and without slide I got caught by the emotionally way that John plays it on youtube and decided to lay apart what I had learned and go for slide-playing in open E.
And I really am exited about it. I will leave the standard til later and dwell for longer time on the open .The DVD’s show so much that I find it worthwhile to take a good time studying every lick with tenderness.

  25. The videos coupled with the tab make a powerful tool for learning blues guitar. I can see myself improving in my playing and improvising as I work through these dvd’s. When I”m done I plan to move on to the slide series. It’s a lot like sitting for a lesson with a teacher except that I can go back and run through any part I want, as many times as I want. Great stuff!
