Recently I decided to get my vintage 1979 Strat that I’ve had since about 1995 a Refret. There were numerous frets that had problems and a lot of lacquer on the neck was peeling off. I took it in to Town Center Music here in Suwanee Ga to see what they thought should be done to get it playing better.
After their guitar tech took a look at it, he recommended that I go ahead and do a complete refret since there were so many issues with them.
I decided to go ahead and do it as this guitar had been needing a lot of something it felt like lately. It’s also such a unique sounding Strat. I’ve never come across another Strat that has this sound. Probably becuase it weighs about 9lbs lol. It’s pretty heavy for sure.
So after a few weeks I go to pick up the guitar and I think Town Center Music did a great job on the refret. Since the lacquer was peeling so bad, it all had to be removed which leaves the fretboard pretty white looking since it had to be sanded a bit as well. The tech ended up putting a bit of stain on it to match the headstock and I think it came out pretty good. I can’t remember the exact size fret that was put on there but the frets were Stew Mac and a similar size to what was already on there to begin with.
After playing this guitar for a few months I think the frets have really set in. It played great when I first got it, but I think the frets and wood have settled to feel more as one. Not sure if that’s a thing but that is what it feels like to me.
