In this DVD lesson you will learn how to effectively use open string scales in the key of E. In open e tuning you can actually play in any key, but when playing slide in open e tuning in the key of E you will have access to all the cool open string sounds. This is similar to what you hear Derek Trucks using on Chevrolet, and many Johnny Winter slide guitar tunes.
Learning how to maximize open strings will turn your slide guitar playing into a force when playing in the key E, which is probably the most played key in the blues. So what are some tunes that are played in the key of E? Here are a few.
- Chevrolet
- Sweet Home Chicago
- Before You Accuse Me
- You Shook Me
- Pride and Joy (actually Eb but many people play it in E.)
You will also learn power chords and how to use 5 different shapes, 10 slide guitar licks you can use over a shuffle blues, 5 Slide Guitar Turnarounds, scales, improvising and more. If you’re interested in learning how to implement some mean dirty-blues slide guitar into your playing then I’m confident this DVD will do just that.

A Great Set Of Lessons That Really Expands The Range Of What You Can Do
The combination of Open String Scales and Hammer On Pull Offs opens up a world of possibilities for learning new riffs. This area of the guitar is unique in that you can do things at the top of the fret board that don't work anywhere else. Some great sounding stuff too. Things that you can pick up on fairly quickly by doing some relitively simple exercises. It's that classic rock up beat blues sound that you hear so much and is fun to learn. I really like this set of lessons. I thought it was a very well done and especially effective group of lessons. Buy it, it's a bargin at twice the price.
Escalate Open E Slide to the next level!
I've been playing slide for a couple of years using John's previous DVDs, so I wasn't exactly a beginner when I got this DVD. Slide 3 presents scales, licks, and tips that are so easy to pick up--dare I say it? "Even a caveman can do it!" Consequently, it has taken much less time to move up the learning curve. Plus, John provided all the tools to keep your learning moving forward, i.e., tabs and backing tracks. My favorite lesson is on power chords. You can move your solos into high gear with those raw, gutsy slide sounds we've always admired. This lesson alone makes me sound like a pro (well, almost). Slide 3 is definitely a "must have" for any aspiring slide player. John can play it, but he knows how to teach it, too. Bravo!
Rock'n the Blues
I have almost all of your instructional DVDs. I would never have learned much about playing with the slide had it not been for your material. I was struggling with the slide for years before getting these DVDs. Now it is fun and not at all intimidating. I have also learned a lot of theory and I like it which surprising the heck out of me. Another benefit is that I can play fret guitar with or without a pick now. Any chance you will do something in open G?
