In this course, I want to show you exactly how to overcome these obstacles that stand in your way of playing great slide guitar in the style of Duane Allman and Derek Trucks. These lessons will teach you exactly how to start playing this style by using the system I have developed throughout the years with students just like you.

All DVDs have been Discontinued. This Course is available in the All Access Pass.

If you practice and apply these lessons I can guarantee you will see results when learning how to play slide guitar. Learning slide guitar can be quite a daunting task. There are so many new concepts to learn that have nothing to do with playing standard guitar.

When I first started learning how to play slide there was not that much information on how to play in open e tuning. I mean, there were some books, but nothing that showed you the really good stuff. This is why I developed my first course and started this entire website. I quickly realized that there was not much clear instruction about how to play slide in this tuning, and specifically if you are wanting to learn the Duane Allman, Derek Trucks style slide guitar.

All the foundation concepts that I have learned over the past 15 years about playing slide in open e tuning are contained in these lessons. The techniques you will learn are ones that I have spent countless hours practicing and mastering by trial and error. Let’s get you started on the right path to playing some cool Allman Bros style slide guitar. Ready to Start?

    Slide guitar 6 DVD course

I bought this course to expand my knowledge of lap steel slide guitar styles. Although designed for over-the-shoulder slide players, it was exactly what I was looking for. A great course for beginner- intermediate sliders.

Slide Guitar Method 1: Open E Tuning

This is just one of many of John’s DVD’s I have purchased. This is a great DVD for someone who has a desire to learn slide guitar. Since my purchase of this DVD I have purchased Open E Slide Guitar 2, 3 and 4. If you want to play like Duane Allman or Derek Trucks, this is a great training course.

    Open E Slide DVD Course

Thanks to John T., I have finally graduated from my mother’s lipstick tube for a makeshift slide and depending on myself to painstakingly make sense of slide guitar. I tried unsuccessfully to teach myself slide decades ago and gave up in frustration–until I ran across John on YouTube last year. The guy knows his stuff and–better yet–he knows how to teach it! I’m only about two DVDs into the program, but I’m excited about what I’ve learned and the possibilites of what I can learn with John’s help. He’s teaching this old dog a bunch of new tricks. Buy it. You’ll be glad you did.

I play lap steel exclusively. It’s very difficult to find instructional material for blues in open E for lap. While this dvd did not specifically address lap steel playing most of the info converted well. And, John’s teaching approach is both clear and thorough. I highly reccommend this product.

Learning and having fun doing it!

I am one happy purchaser of John Tuggle’s Slide Guitar 6 DVD Course. I wasted time and money on a couple of books on Amazon (including one terrible one from a well known and highly respected musician) before I realized that the few things I’d seen by John on YouTube had taught me tons more than anything I’d got from those books. So I bought this and it’s been forward progress ever since. I’ve learned something valuable from almost every section – even when I think I’m not. For example, I didn’t get too excited about learning straight scales until a few minutes into it John had me using them to run up little ABB-like melodies. I vowed not to skip anything after that. I’m only into DVD #2 and as anxious as I am to find out what’s next I’m following John’s advice to incorporate the new material into my practice routine before moving on. He’s a natural teacher by the way and the dual camera work on slide hand and pick hand is great. Stop wasting your time and money on other stuff and just get this. You won’t regret it.

This is a well organized set instructional DVDs with lots of pertinent information. Nice job John. Once I have mastered this set of DVDs I’ll buy more. I hope you’ll continue to come up with new lessons for slide guitar.

Slide Guitar Method 1: Open E tuning

I have been playing guitar for approximately 25 years and have always wanted to figure out how to play slide but didn’t know anyone who could show me the ropes. John’s method(s) is/are outstanding and shows exactly what you need to do to play. Although I have only begun to practice these methods, my wife has already asked me how I’ve learned to play some of the licks shown. Great stuff!

Slide Guitar Method Will Have You PLAYING What You’ve Only Heard Up Till Now

This is a MUST for anyone who digs on the Allman Brothers and DTB!!! I have been playing guitar for 17yrs (Self taught). I know my scales and theory well enough to step in on most jams. I’ve been stabbing at playing the slide now for several years and just had not gotten the results I was looking for. Three week later after working with John’s DVD set on slide, I can hold my own in a jam. (and turn some heads as well) John’s simple approach is the most concise well explained video I’ve seen. His teaching technique is simple and direct. Within the first hour I was moving into territory that I only heard in my head. Now I can play the real thing. I’ve previewed all the DVD’s and am only on disk 2. Much room to develop my technique and style and with this DVD set, I know it’s going to happen. Many thanks to John and the crew who put this together. These belong in every guitar players catalog!

    Great Slide Course

Great slide course from a great teacher. Well organized, easy to follow, and well worth the cost. I’ve been playing slide for many years but this helped me expand beyond the basics and open up the fretboard without getting too bogged down in music theory. I especially like the lessons on the major and mixolydian scales and am playing more melodically now because of them. The best part is that I can pause and rewind indefinitely and keep practicing until I master what is new to me.

    Another outstanding course

See my review of the open E tuning. Johns courses are outstanding. Real techniques. Great approach. I feel like I’m sitting there with him and he’s encouraging me. I have been playing for 25 years and I would consider myself fairly advanced. I’m a straight blues guitar player and I have made great strides over the last few weeks with John’s courses. I quit my guitar teacher and now I’m only doing John’s courses which are an insane value. One hour of his lessons are worth a month of guitar lessons.

    This is where to start

I think that this lesson is very well put together. The tips that you get here will help you learn how to play slide guitar correctly. I’ve been playing guitar now for about ten years and tried slide twice before (once on my own and once with a DVD) and this lesson beats it with a baseball ball bat!!! I like the fact that John tells you the little things, which IMO makes all the difference in the world when it comes to tone and control. If you want to learn how to play slide, you will not be disappointed with this video. Great job John! (Umm…I usually don’t even write reviews)

    Slide in open E

Hi….John, No problem with my purchase ! Wonderful lessons and great solos… I play a lap steel guitar in open E tuning (it’s practically the same playing like slide!) and I follow your lessons with a great enjoy !!!! I’m very happy having founded this course applied for Blues in open E… because it’s not usual to found a course directly applied for that! Great thanks !! Best regards…..

slide guitar course (6 dvd set)

This is by far the best dvd lesson I have purchased. I ultimately want to learn to play Lap Steel Guitar like David Lindley (who backed Jackson Browne). I have now switched gears and I’m learning electric slide guitar in the Duane Allman & Derek Trucks stlye, which I have always loved as well. In time, I will be able to transfer and adapt many of these new skills into my lap steel playing. I don’t always get to practice as much as I want to, so its gonna take me a while. In the end, I have no doubt this DVD course will take me exactly where I want to go. I’m only still in the first DVD and I am re-learning, because I learned a few things wrong on my own. Mr. John Tuggle, thank you so much for putting this lesson together!

  21. cavicc—Boston, MA

    Totally awesome!

I thought I was a pretty good slide player, before I bought this lesson. Now I realize I was not. I I learned more in 2 hours of playing along with this DVD that I did by myself in 10 years. My playing is cleaner and faster. The sounds and tones I was always looking for have finally arrived. I would recommend this to everyone who wants to learn the propoer way to play slide guitar.

Learning slide guitar the right way from the start!

I’ve had this DVD for about two weeks now, averaging about an hour a day of watching John and then trying to duplicate his technique. I love his method of teaching for two reasons; 1) I feel he is teaching me to learn slide guitar the “right” way from the beginning in order to avoid picking up bad habits that will trip me up down the road and perhaps cause me to quit in frustration. 2) He breaks down the riffs so completely, and with plenty of repetitions, so that even I can follow along! I would never have guessed I would come this far in just a few weeks, this DVD is a fantastic value. It would have taken many, many guitar lessons just to get to the level I’m at today. Thanks John!

  23. Hough—Cheshire, England

    A joyful noise

An outstanding series of lessons from an experienced and talented slide player, whose teaching skills match those in his playing. Although I have been playing slide for thirty years I have still learnt an enormous amount from the DVD’s, and can unreservedly recommend them to anyone who is prepared to put in the time required to make a joyful noise.

    up and sliding fast!

Hey John, I’ve been playing guitar and bass for about 30 yrs. Your video put me right where I wanted to be in no time!I am actually playing, making up my own riffs too, and haveing alot of fun with it. Thanks to your video! I knew nothing about slide guitar before, but always thought I may have a knack for it..when I get a bit more grounded, I’ll be up for the next DVD…good job!

    Great product

Decided to learn slide after an injury to my left hand started to limit my playing time. An internet search found Mr. Tuggle’s free lessons, which I enjoyed so much I decided to take a chance on buying “Slide Method 1: Open E Tuning.” I’m only about 2/3 of the way through the videos, but so far I am very impressed. The quality of video is great, the included tabs are very helpful, and most of all Mr. Tuggle’s instructions and examples are excellent. This product has surpassed my expectations in every way. And my playing has improved drastically. If you are interested in learning slide, do yourself a favor and buy “Slide Guitar Method 1: Open E Tuning.” For the cost of this DVD, an inexpensive slide, and maybe a bigger set of strings, you’ll be on your way to playing like Duane Allman.

    Slide Guitar 6 DVD Course

I found the course fairly easy to follow. John explains everything in a clear manner. The DVD course is great by being able to go back over lessons and points either forgotten or missed.

A good entry in technique and style. I´ve made a good progress in playing slide guitar after this DVD. Actually I´m learning with DVD 3.

    Love it

This lesson exceeded my expectations, slide guitar in open E. I am brand new to slide guitar and this has gotten me started off on the right foot. This lesson is great for slide beginners as it shows the basic fundamentals and does not contain an overwhelming amount of information. In a short amount of time I was playing some cool licks and doing it properly. I am looking forward to purchasing more lessons as I progress!

    Open E Slide Lessons

These lessons are music to my ears. Wanting to take my slide guitar playing to the next level, I purchased the lessons. Within the first few minutes of the lessons, I noticed instant improvent, especially in my tone, which was drastically improved in one simple step: Muting. The lessons are done in a easy to follow step by step instruction. Each lesson building on what was previously disscussed. Great exercizes to help you with technique and to bring you up to “speed”. Another great attribute about these lessons is the way John teaches the use of scales and their intervals. Opening up the entire fretboard, in a pragmatic fashion. Breaking me out of the “blues box” so to speak.Lastly, the improvement in my ears was just icing on the cake. If you’re interested in learning the slide guitar, these are the lessons for you. John, Thank you for these great lessons and helping bring my slide playing in the right direction.

    Great Resource!

This is a great compliment to lessons with my local instructor since I can use at home between lessons. The tabs and backing tracks have really been helpful also. John T. is a great teacher and awesome guitar player!

    Slide guitar open E tuning

    Dear John,

I am short in time due to my job as engineer of powerplants, but only some short views to your lessons brought me many steps ahead in playing well.

I am playing a 1957 Gibson ES 295 and 1947 ES 150 with perfectly sound for slide guitar. Aswell some German guitars of the 50ths Framus thinline sounding great and dirty with slide.

Anyhow with this great guitars and your very well done lessons I am happy.

Best regards Holger from North Germany

  33. Dave—Cincinnati, Ohio

    Fantastic slide lessons

I must say John has the best slide lessons period.! I purchase the 6 CD set and have picked up a few good licks and I know nothing about guitar playing. I have no doubt that given time i will master playing slide. The CD’S are very well made and easy to understand.

  34. Jeff—Kyle, TX

    Excellent

The lessons are well laid out and allow for easy repeat of any issues that you have. The tabs are also nice to have in case you forget something. This is probably be best course I have taken since I started playing and the course makes it fun to learn what could well be an intimidating experience. Thanks a bunch!

    Hey John,

Just wanted to say that I recently bought the Open E Slide Guitar set of videos, and I don’t remember the last time I’ve had this much fun playing guitar.

I’m not even through the first dvd and I already feel like I’m really changing as a player. I’ve been playing for 20 years, and my playing had pretty much stalled and stopped advancing.

I feel like I’m a young dude again and really enjoying learning something new. Your videos are awesome, and I’ll be buying more.

    Thanks a lot!

    Lost but now found

I felt like I was in a rut with no help to reach my desired goal to play slide in the Derek Trucks style.

My wife bought me a SG knowing I had been trying to learn since 1999. But gave up…then John’s videos came out and I focused to stay on track and never look back.

I have finally reached a level that never would have been possible without John’s slide videos.

  37. Ian in Texas

So far, so good! Lessons are well layer out and easy to follow and I have already learned a few new tricks. Looking forward to completing this one and moving on to method 2.

  38. Mike L in Illinois

    John,

It has been about 4 weeks since purchasing your Open E Slide course. I am extremely happy with the purchase. The quality of the DVD’s and material is first class.

My schedule doesn’t allow me to play everyday but my progress has certainly put a smile on my face, thanks to you and the course. I started playing on my LP (high quality Epi, I’ll leave the Gibsons for the guys that make money playing guitar) and could reach the 17th fret but found it impossible to get to 20 and 22, and while I love my LP I hate the almost oppressive weight of it.

I’ve had my eye on an SG for sometime. Wanting to have a guitar strictly for slide. I did find a lightly used Epi SG-400 at a price that dared me to pass it by. Got it last Friday it is in near perfect condition. It was set up so perfectly that I almost hesitated raising the strings.

Of course I did and in conjunction with learning that less is more with my amp and effects I was able to dial in a really sweet tone. As close as I could get to your tone. (using a Marshall Blues Breaker II OD)

I don’t know if it is the guitar or me reaching another level but my playing is like night and day.

I get it, I hear it, I feel it. Some days when I pick it up I sound as if the wheels have come off but I know that’s natural. Like playing golf, it isn’t about hitting more great shots, it is about hitting less horrible shots. With practice you remove the bad and all that’s left is the good.

Found your blog tonight about how you started playing slide. Serves as a great reminder that even accomplished players, such as yourself, sounded like a dying cat when they started. Made me laugh a bit because I call that sound “cat in a blender”.

Anyway.. just a quick note of thanks for all the hard work you put into this course. In due time I will purchase another. Money well spent.

Hope your arm is mending well.

    Sincerely,

    Mike L

    Excellent starter for electric slide

I am very impressed with John’s teaching and materials in the Open E course. He is very clear, and the double angle lets the student see exactly what he is doing with BOTH hands (the right hand is very critical in slide, but if often overlooked in the excitement of the slidy left hand moves).

He does things often enough to let you see them clearly and then moves on, and the tab lessons are a good backup. The audio files are great to practice and jam along to, and he gets to the ‘Derek Trucks rake’ sound very quickly – I have puzzled over this for ages without success, but am now on the way to getting it down.

This course is excellent value for the budding Duane/Derek electric slide player.

  40. Steve D in New York

    Excellent Because It’s Made Simple

I can’t say enough good things about this course. It seems everybody claims to teach but simply shows what they know. There is a vast difference between the two. John breaks it down step by step which gives you the opportunity to learn at your own pace and actually come away with many more skills than you started with.

I recommend any of his courses to any guitarist out there simply because, whether he knows it or not, he knows how to teach much better than the next guy. A talent in and of itself. Very highly recommended.

  41. Alex magliocchetti

John has excellent skills as a player and a great teaching attitude. The 4 lessons on open e slide guitar are all very good and useful.
Though even the basic techniques are thoroughly explained, in my opinion this course is a great tool for intermediate players that want to improve their skills, knowledge of scales, and get into som Duane Allman and Derek Trucks style

  42. ccarey0202

If you’re interested in learning to play slide guitar in Open E like Duane Allman or Derek Trucks, look no further! This is the course for you!!! John does a great job of explaining the roadblocks and frustrations to learning slide guitar and how to overcome these. He is a great teacher, and breaks each lick into normal speed and slower speeds. He breaks the solos into individual licks so you can practice and master each one before moving on. I recommend this lesson to anyone wanting to learn slide guitar or simply to improve their technique.
